Are You Enlarging Your Prostate While on Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)?
Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) has become a common treatment for men who have a blood level of testosterone lower than 300 ng/dl with symptoms of testosterone deficiency. While TRT has some very positive benefits, a new study found why men on TRT are now finding themselves diagnosed with prostate hyperplasia.
Prostate hyperplasia can lead to frequent urination in some men. The prostate, which is at the base of the bladder, is rich in testosterone receptors and can enlarge when men are on TRT thus causing urinary frequency and urgency.
A recent article published in the Urology Journal (edition 196) highlights that men on testosterone replacement therapy are more likely to be diagnosed with prostate hyperplasia (enlargement) after 2.5 years of TRT treatment.
The enlarged prostate can be treated with medical therapy or surgical therapy, but this and numerous studies show that TRT treatment does not result in increased risk of intervention compared to men not receiving TRT therapy.
