MANday: The Importance of Examining the male’s fertility before trying IVF

It has been a long misconception that if you’re having problems conceiving naturally, then you need In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)…which is a fertility treatment option.

IVF can do remarkable things using advanced reproductive technology (ART), essentially taking a sperm and injecting it directly into an egg to create an embryo. The embryo is then implanted into the uterus.

However, we should not neglect the male factor of fertility because it influences success with natural conception as well as IVF treatment. Here at The Y Factor, we specialize in treating male infertility by focusing on treatable causes and improving sperm quality.

According to the American Urological Association (AUA) and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) guidelines, found here, male fertility is important! These two medical societies are the most important fertility societies in North America.

ASRM Guideline number 1, “For initial infertility evaluation, both male and female partners should undergo concurrent assessment. (Expert Opinion)”. This consists of a male fertility history and a semen analysis.

ASRM Guideline number 3, “Men with one or more abnormal semen parameters or presumed male infertility should be evaluated by a male reproductive expert for complete history and physical examination as well as other directed tests when indicated. (Expert Opinion)” The urologist is the physician performing this physical examination and fertility treatment in men.

At The Y Factor, our goal is to assist you through this process so there’s a higher chance of conceiving by focusing on the correctable factors in the male partner. “A male factor is solely responsible in about 20% of infertile couples and co responsible in another 30-40% of infertile couples.” The male fertility evaluation enhances fertility treatment and minimizes transference of genetic defects to offspring. Protect your IVF investment with a complete evaluation of the male partner.
