Erectile Dysfunction Can Be About More Than Sex: What Men Under 45 Should Know

When a younger man develops erectile dysfunction, the immediate question is often, “How do I fix my erections?” Another question is just as important: “Why did my erections change?”
Erectile function depends on blood vessels, nerves, hormones, psychological health, and overall physical health. For men across Houston, Katy, Cypress, and The Woodlands, a persistent change in erectile function can be an opportunity to evaluate sexual health and, when appropriate, broader health risks at the same time.
Erections Depend on Blood Flow
For an erection to occur, blood vessels supplying the penis must dilate and deliver increased blood flow. Conditions that negatively affect vascular health can therefore affect erectile function. These include high blood pressure, diabetes, abnormal cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity.
Does ED Mean I Have Heart Disease?
No. Erectile dysfunction does not mean that you have cardiovascular disease or that you are going to have a heart attack. However, ED and cardiovascular disease share important risk factors. The Princeton IV consensus recognizes ED as a cardiovascular risk marker and risk-enhancing factor, which can make persistent ED an opportunity to assess underlying vascular risk when clinically appropriate.
Why This Can Matter in Younger Men
Age has a major influence on traditional cardiovascular risk calculations. A younger man may therefore have a relatively low short-term calculated risk even while certain risk factors are developing. Erectile symptoms do not replace standard cardiovascular assessment, but they can provide another reason to review blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, smoking, exercise, body composition, and family history.
What Might a Clinician Check?
There is no single universal “ED blood panel” that is right for every patient. Depending on the individual, evaluation may include blood pressure, glucose or hemoglobin A1c, lipids, testosterone when indicated, other hormonal testing based on symptoms, kidney function, sleep apnea risk, medication review, and overall metabolic risk. Specialized cardiovascular or erectile-function testing is reserved for patients who need it.
What About Testosterone?
Testosterone matters, particularly for sexual desire, but low testosterone should not automatically be blamed for every erection problem. Some men with ED have normal testosterone; others may have hormonal abnormalities contributing to their symptoms. Testing and treatment should be individualized.
Can I Just Take Cialis?
For many appropriate patients, tadalafil or sildenafil can be effective. But successful medication does not necessarily explain why erectile function changed. At The Y Factor, the objective is to improve sexual function while also identifying clinically relevant contributors when they are present.
A Houston Men’s Health Approach: Treat the Symptom and Understand the Signal
The Y Factor’s approach is designed for men who want more than a prescription transaction. Whether a patient is coming from Houston, Katy, Cypress, The Woodlands, or another nearby community, the starting point is a focused evaluation that considers sexual function in the context of overall health. The goal is not to frighten men about cardiovascular disease. It is to avoid missing modifiable factors that may be worth addressing earlier.
