Male Factor Infertility & IVF: How We Coordinate With Your Partner's Fertility Clinic

Male factors contribute to roughly half of all infertility cases, yet in most couples going through IVF, the male partner's evaluation happens almost as an afterthought — a single semen analysis dropped into an otherwise female-focused process.

If you and your partner are already working with a reproductive endocrinologist, our role is to make sure the male side of that process is handled with the same rigor as the female side — and coordinated on the same timeline, not running separately.

What Coordination Actually Means in Practice

Sharing Records Directly

Rather than relaying results through you, we communicate semen analysis findings, hormone panels, and any imaging directly with your partner's fertility clinic when you authorize it. This avoids the common problem of a reproductive endocrinologist making a treatment plan based on an outdated or incomplete male-factor picture.

Timing Sperm Retrieval to Her Cycle

If sperm retrieval (TESE/microTESE) is part of your plan, timing has to be precise — retrieval generally needs to align with her egg retrieval or a coordinated freeze/thaw schedule. Getting this wrong costs a full IVF cycle, which is expensive and emotionally difficult to repeat. We coordinate scheduling directly with her clinic rather than leaving you to relay dates back and forth.

Optimizing What Can Be Optimized Before Retrieval

Depending on your labs, there may be a window to improve sperm parameters before a retrieval or a fresh semen analysis for IVF — through hormone optimization, treating a correctable cause like a varicocele, or lifestyle changes if there's enough runway before the planned cycle.

ICSI and Why Male Factor Still Matters Even With It

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) — where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg — solves some male factor problems by requiring far fewer viable sperm than natural conception or standard IVF. But ICSI doesn't eliminate the need for a real male evaluation: sperm DNA fragmentation, for instance, can affect embryo quality even when a viable sperm is successfully injected. We still recommend a full workup rather than assuming ICSI makes male-factor evaluation unnecessary.
