There’s blood in my urine, what should I do?

Blood in the urine (microscopic hematuria) requires prompt, thorough urological investigation, including specialized urine tests and imaging, to rule out serious conditions like bladder cancer, even though it is most often benign.

Blood in the urine can be frightening to hear for the first time. What does it mean? What do I have to do to get it checked? Here at The Y Factor, we have the knowledge and tools to thoroughly investigate why blood was found in the urine and the steps in treatment.

Microscopic hematuria, better known as simply “blood in the urine”, is when blood cells are found on a urine test. There are several different reasons why blood is in the urine, ranging from simply a kidney stone to unfortunately, bladder cancer. In order to investigate what is the root cause, a thorough investigation must be done. Whether that is cutting edge urine tests that look for markers for cancer, or imaging such as a CT scan/kidney x-ray. In some cases, a cystoscopy is necessary to directly visualize the bladder for any lesions. Although having blood in the urine sounds frightening, most of the time it is not cancer (AUA,2020). Nevertheless, it is imperative to be evaluated by our urology team to be sure that is the case.

Do you need medical clearance to get back to work because of a failed DOT urine analysis test due to blood in the urine? We can also help you out with that. Learn more here.
