What Does a Semen Analysis Measure?

A standard semen analysis looks at several key factors:

Sperm Count

The total number of sperm present in a single ejaculate. A normal sperm count is typically 15 million sperm per milliliter or more. A low count — known as oligospermia — can reduce the chances of conception.

Sperm Motility

Motility refers to how well sperm move. Sperm need to swim efficiently to reach and fertilize an egg. A semen analysis measures both the percentage of moving sperm and the quality of their movement.

Sperm Morphology

Morphology is the shape and structure of sperm. Abnormally shaped sperm may have difficulty penetrating an egg. A normal result requires at least 4% of sperm to have a typical form.

Semen Volume

The total amount of fluid produced during ejaculation. Too little volume can indicate a problem with the seminal vesicles or prostate.

pH and Other Factors

Semen pH, white blood cell count, and liquefaction time are also evaluated and can provide additional insight into reproductive health.

Why Do Men Get a Semen Analysis?

If a couple has been trying to conceive without success for 12 months or more — or 6 months if the female partner is over 35 — a semen analysis is one of the first tests recommended.
