How Penile Shockwave Therapy can help treat Erectile Dysfunction

Of the many treatment options available for erectile dysfunction (ED), a novel ultrasound therapy, supported by several research studies, shows exciting promise. Penile shockwave therapy, clinically known as low-intensity shockwave therapy (LiSWT), appears to be most effective for men with vasculogenic ED that affects blood flow to tissue in the penis. LiSWT’s effectiveness with other causes of ED is still undetermined, but it has also been used to promote wound healing by increasing tissue repair via new cell growth.

LiSWT for ED involves applying pulsed ultrasound at right angles to and longitudinally across the penis and perineum. Treatments are completely painless and typically last 15-20 minutes. Research, based on six weekly treatments, shows that LiSWT promotes angiogenesis, or new blood vessel development, that improves blood flow in the penis. Furthermore medication is like Cialis and Viagra are only temporary treatments for erectile dysfunction.

Recent studies show that in men with mild to moderate ED, 67-70% reported significantly improved erectile function following LiSWT treatments with effects lasting up to 30 months in more than half of this group. Men with mild to moderate ED also would generally respond to Viagra and Cialis, however, these medications also cause unwanted side effects, like headache and nasal congestion.
