Low Serum Testosterone Levels Are Associated with Increases in Cardiovascular Disease Biomarkers

Most men trying to raise their testosterone don't realize that pushing levels too high is just as risky as leaving them too low. Research presented at the American Urological Association confirms it — and it's exactly why The Y Factor does things differently.

What the Research Found

Dr. Alexander Pastuszak and his team presented award-winning research examining the relationship between cardiovascular (CV) risk and testosterone levels in men. Their findings were striking.

It has long been known that low testosterone increases cardiovascular risk. What this study added was something most Low T clinics aren't telling their patients: very high testosterone levels increase cardiovascular risk too.

Specifically, the study found that CV risk increases at testosterone levels below 250 ng/dL — and again at levels of 1,000 ng/dL and above.

As the researchers noted:

"Interestingly, while patients with low testosterone levels were at an increased CV risk when examining all biomarkers, [many of them] exhibited a U-shaped distribution, suggesting additional CV risk at very high T levels."— Dr. Alexander W. Pastuszak, MD, PhD, et al. | American Urological Association News, November 2016

This U-shaped curve is critical. It means there is a safe window for testosterone levels — and going too far in either direction creates risk.

Why This Matters for Men Getting Testosterone Shots

Testosterone injections — the default treatment at most Low T clinics — frequently push testosterone levels well above 1,000 ng/dL, particularly in the days immediately following an injection. This is a known and common side effect of standard injection protocols.

Men on weekly testosterone shots often experience dramatic peaks and valleys in their levels throughout the week. At the peak, levels can reach or exceed the threshold the AUA research identified as cardiovascular risk territory — without the patient ever being told.

This isn't a minor issue. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among men in the United States. Any treatment that unnecessarily elevates cardiovascular risk deserves serious scrutiny.

The Y Factor's Approach: Keeping Testosterone in the Safe Range

The goal of testosterone treatment should never simply be to raise your number. It should be to restore your levels to a healthy, normal range — and keep them there consistently.

At The Y Factor, our programs are specifically designed to do exactly that. By prioritizing natural testosterone stimulation over synthetic replacement, we aim to:

  • Bring testosterone levels back to the normal range — not spike them artificially above it
  • Avoid the peaks and valleys associated with standard injection protocols
  • Minimize cardiovascular risk by maintaining levels within the range the research identifies as safest
  • Reduce or eliminate the need for testosterone injections in men who respond well to natural stimulation therapy

When a man's testosterone is restored through his own production — using medications that stimulate the body's natural output — the result is a steady, physiologically appropriate level. Not a weekly spike that pushes him into risk territory.

For Men Already on Testosterone Injections

If you are currently on testosterone replacement therapy and concerned about cardiovascular risk, the conversation doesn't end at stopping treatment. Coming off TRT without medical guidance can cause your levels to crash — which, as the research shows, carries its own cardiovascular risk.

The Y Factor specializes in protocols designed to safely transition men off synthetic testosterone and restore their body's natural production. This is a process that requires clinical experience and careful monitoring — and it is something we do routinely.

What This Means for Your Care at The Y Factor

The AUA research reinforces what The Y Factor has believed from the beginning: treating low testosterone is not about chasing a high number. It is about precision — restoring balance within a range that is both effective and safe.

Every treatment plan at The Y Factor is built around this principle. We use comprehensive lab monitoring to track your levels throughout treatment, adjust protocols as needed, and ensure you are never pushed into the high-risk zones the research identifies.

That is what it means to treat low testosterone the right way.

Frequently
Asked Questions

  • Can testosterone treatment increase cardiovascular risk?

Research presented at the American Urological Association annual meeting found that cardiovascular risk increases at both very low testosterone levels (below 250 ng/dL) and very high levels (1,000 ng/dL and above). Standard testosterone injections frequently push levels into the high-risk range at peak. The Y Factor's treatment approach is designed to restore testosterone to a normal, safe range and keep it there.

  • What testosterone level is considered safe?

Based on the AUA-presented research, cardiovascular risk increases at levels below 250 ng/dL and at 1,000 ng/dL or above. The Y Factor's treatment goal is to restore and maintain testosterone within a healthy, normal range — not to maximize levels.

  • Why do testosterone injections sometimes cause high levels?

Standard testosterone injection protocols often cause significant peaks in testosterone levels in the days immediately following the injection, followed by a decline toward the end of the cycle. These peaks can push levels well above 1,000 ng/dL — the threshold associated with increased cardiovascular risk in the AUA research.

  • Can I switch from testosterone injections to a natural approach?

In many cases, yes. The Y Factor specializes in protocols designed to safely transition men off synthetic testosterone and restore natural production. This process requires careful clinical management and monitoring and should not be attempted without medical guidance.

  • What makes The Y Factor's approach different from other Low T clinics?

The Y Factor prioritizes natural testosterone restoration over synthetic replacement, uses comprehensive lab monitoring throughout treatment, and designs individualized protocols aimed at restoring levels to a safe, normal range — not simply pushing levels as high as possible. Our approach is grounded in the latest urological research and managed by board-certified urologists.
