- SURGICAL LASER PROCEDURE
This procedure is performed under light general anesthesia and reduces the size of the prostate, potentially reducing the need for medication. Treatment options will depend on the patient and the severity of the condition.
Prostate Cancer Screening
Screenings for prostate cancer are recommended for men over 50 years of age. A comprehensive medical prostate exam, together with a complete patient medical history, are integral parts of this screening.
Diagnostic testing through a simple blood test, called the Prostate-Specific Antigen test (PSA), identifies patients that are at risk for prostate cancer. The Y Factor provides the specialized diagnostic testing necessary to determine the cause of an elevated PSA level such as a prostate biopsy.
A prostate biopsy is performed as a 15 minute in-office procedure at the Memorial Y Factor location under local anesthesia. The Urologists at The Y Factor will recommend the appropriate treatment plan for all patients that have positive biopsies. Patients with no cancer detected are closely monitored using a variety of supplemental specialized diagnostic laboratory testing and a schedule of follow-up care.
URINARY ISSUES
The Y Factor specializes in diagnosis and treatment of all urinary issues common to men of all ages. These include urinary tract infections, urinary obstructions, prostate infections, urethral scar tissue, and overactive bladder.

Urethral dilation is performed in the office to alleviate symptoms caused from strictures or obstructions. These strictures cause abnormal narrowing of the urethra, inhibiting urine flow. The urethral dilation procedure gently stretched the urethra with a tube. This procedure is performed in the office with oral pain medication and under nitrous oxide.

15 years ago, I had a vasectomy and recently needed a sperm retrieval for my wife’s IVF procedure. The major risk associated with a prostate biopsy is a prostate infection. This occurs in 5% of prostate biopsies.
Is a prostate biopsy painful?
The prostate biopsy is performed under local anesthesia and lasts approximately 2-3 minutes. Most men will describe some prostate pressure and discomfort during the biopsy.
